    Sustainability isn’t a trend for us, it’s ingrained in everything we do. Our commitment to transforming the built environment drives us to collaborate and innovate, fostering Ecologically Sustainable Development.

    Careful consideration of local climatic conditions, siting and orientation leads us to the optimum energy-efficient solutions for each project.

    By integrating Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) principles, we’re not only reducing our carbon footprint but also enhancing the comfort and efficiency of our spaces. ESD-focused buildings offer exceptional thermal comfort and lower running costs, making them a smart, sustainable choice for both residential and commercial projects.

    Our approach centres around sustainable timber-framed construction, which has lower embodied energy and provides superior insulation compared to brick, concrete, aluminium, or steel. Our prefabrication process minimises construction waste—addressing one of Australia’s largest sources of landfill. We thoughtfully select materials based on environmental impact, including recycled content, renewable resources, and low or zero VOCs.

    Environment & Materials

    Arkit is committed to delivering buildings that not only meet functional and aesthetic needs, but also minimise ecological impact, contributing to a more sustainable future.

    Offsite construction is inherently better for the environment. It reduces construction waste, Australia’s largest contributor to landfill, and lightweight construction reduces the building’s environmental footprint. More vegetation and topsoil can be retained, and the need for portland cement and coastal sand is mitigated.

    All Arkit buildings use either plantation or sustainable managed and forested timbers. Timber has been a trusted building material in Australia for over 150 years. It grows naturally, is renewable, and requires less energy to produce than steel or concrete. Only 6% of Australia’s native forests are potentially available for timber harvesting, and about 1% of these public native forests are harvested each year.

We are committed to five key environmentally friendly business practices – an approach that ensures that every Arkit building is energy-efficient and environmentally responsible, and promotes healthy, comfortable living and working spaces for occupants.

    • High-density recycled polyester insulation in wall, floor and ceiling cavities
    • Wall and floor finishes containing recycled content
    • Oriented strand board (OSB) produced from recovered wood strands for structural bracing and flooring

    Carbon Neutrality

    We approach Modern Methods of Construction with a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) mindset.

    This approach enables us to focus on efficient manufacturing processes and streamlined, efficient assembly. It allows for improved resource use and a reduced environmental footprint of construction activities.

    Our commitment to sustainability is evident in our use of timber-framed construction, which requires less embodied energy compared to traditional materials like brick, concrete, aluminium, and steel and offers superior insulation properties. This results in buildings that are not only energy-efficient but also environmentally responsible.

    Through this approach, we are actively working toward reaching carbon neutrality, a state where net carbon dioxide emissions are reduced to zero. Timber, as a renewable resource, plays a pivotal role in achieving this. Trees absorb carbon dioxide during their growth, and approximately 50% of their dry mass consists of carbon. When these trees are processed into timber products, the carbon remains stored within the material, effectively locking it away for the lifespan of the product.

    By incorporating timber-framed construction into our prefabrication systems, we contribute to a built environment that aligns with global goals for carbon neutrality.

    Our designs are tailored to each site to maximise passive heating and cooling principles, embracing natural light to create bespoke spaces that are as sustainable as they are beautiful. With an innovative building envelope that enhances thermal performance, we aim to reduce energy use by 50% annually. This has an immense effect on the environment, with 14% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions tied to building climate control.

    Aligned with our organisational focus on sustainability, Arkit is experienced in design and construction to the Passive House standard.
